Preserving, protecting and enhancing our lake

Alum Treatment Update:
$100,000 more to go!

Together, we’ve brought the next step in rehabilitating Lake Winnecook within reach. We have just $100,000 left to raise by December 31 to receive our full match from our silent donor. Now, we’re inviting 200 shoreline property owners who have not yet contributed to join the effort so can get the match!

In Tribute: A Love of the Lake that Endures

For Jim Wescott, Unity Pond was not only a place to live, but also a connection to family, a place to fish and boat, and a natural resource he cared deeply about protecting. His wife, Joan, brought people together this month to honor that love — and help preserve the lake.

Mac’s Hardware is partnering with Friends of Lake Winnecook to stock and load Erosion Control Mulch. The mix of shredded wood fibers and natural soil material slows stormwater runoff and protects bare ground.

The perfect gift: A Lake Winnecook Cookbook

With the holidays around the corner, cherished recipes from friends and neighbors across the lake are truly a blessing. All proceeds from the Lake Winnecook Community Cookbook support our restoration effort!

Leveraging funds received through a grant from the John Sage Foundation, as well as in-kind donations and support from the Maine DEP, Unity Pond sediment was analyzed in 2022 and 2023 as a next step in the Watershed-Based Management Plan. Click on the button below to view the scientific data.

Watershed Survey: Final Report

Unity Pond’s water quality is impacted by pollution from numerous small, diffuse sources across the pond’s watershed. When rain and snowmelt flow across land, they pick up soil, nutrients and other pollutants. This is known as “nonpoint source” pollution (NPS) and is the primary threat to most lakes in Maine.

Click the link below for the Final Report of the Unity Pond Watershed Survey, which was conducted in 2021. The report provided our members with insight regarding the sources of pollution around the watershed, a list of properties that have been identified as potential risks, as well as suggestions on how to rectify the issues found.

Protecting our watershed should be an effort undertaken and supported by the entire Lake Winnecook community.
