Erosion Control Mulch Available at Cost This Fall
Mac’s Hardware has partnered with Friends of Lake Winnecook to stock and load Erosion Control Mulch (ECM) this fall.
ECM is a dense mixture of shredded wood fibers and natural soil material that protects bare ground, slows stormwater runoff, and helps prevent phosphorus-rich soil from washing into Unity Pond.
During this special, the price is comparable to ordinary bark mulch, but ECM offers important advantages for shoreline properties. It contains no added dyes, and its fibrous material and natural grit knit together to stay in place. If some reaches the water, it does not behave like lightweight bark mulch that can float away and collect on the lake’s surface. It is the only product authorized by Maine DEP (and therefore town ordinances) for work in the Shoreland Zone.
FOLW is pre-purchasing the mulch and offering it to members at cost:
$45 per cubic yard when purchased online
$42.20 per cubic yard when paid by check

Purchase your mulch from FOLW first, and we will add your name and order to the pickup list at Mac’s. You can then have it loaded at your convenience.
Don’t have a truck or trailer? Some neighbors may be available to deliver. We can put you in contact with them so you can make arrangements directly.
Mac’s will begin applying its regular markup next spring, so this fall is the time to complete that erosion-control project and save money while helping protect Unity Pond.
HOW TO ORDER
First, measure the area you need to cover in square feet (length by width).
Second, consider the depth of ECM desired (4” is typical; see guidelines below).
Third, follow the formula below.
Fourth, multiply CY by $45/CY (or $42.20/CY if paying by check). Confirm you can afford that amount and adjust if necessary.
Fifth, fill out the form below. If paying by card, continue to the PayPal payment link. If paying by check or cash, we will give you a call to arrange for drop off or mailing.
Coverage formula:
One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet.
Square feet covered = 324 ÷ application depth in inches
At Maine DEP’s recommended 4-inch depth:
324 ÷ 4 = 81 square feet per cubic yard
Coverage per cubic yard:
3 inches covers 108 sq. ft.
4 inches covers 81 sq. ft.
5 inches covers 65 sq. ft.
6 inches covers 54 sq. ft.
Ordering formula:
Cubic yards needed = (square feet × depth in inches) ÷ 324
Example: A 20-by-20-foot area is 400 square feet.
400 × 4 ÷ 324 = 4.94 cubic yards
Order approximately 5 cubic yards, or slightly more for uneven ground, settling, and waste. Maine DEP recommends a 4-inch base depth, with additional thickness on long, steep slopes. (www.maine.gov)
